UT Austin Selects Learning Objects to Design and Deliver Online Training for Middle School Guidance Counselors

OnCourse Program to feature competency-based training program and framework for 2017

AUSTIN, TX and BOSTON, October 31, 2016—Learning Objects, a Cengage company, has been selected by the University of Texas at Austin to design and deliver a competency-based online training program for secondary counselors and advisers, the company announced today. The program, called Texas OnCourse, is a statewide initiative to streamline student pathways to postsecondary and career success through best in class online training modules and resources for educators, students and families.

Aligned with goals established by Texas OnCourse, Learning Objects will design and deliver an online training program focused on specific competencies related to:
• high school graduation plans
• options for students to earn course credit
• college and university admissions requirements
• regional workforce opportunities
• effective strategies for planning for high school, college, and career opportunities

Leveraging the Learning Objects Competency Framework will allow for tracking of learner performance and granting credentials based on competency mastery. The Learning Objects Competency Framework enables the competencies to be mapped to the appropriate learning activities and assessments. This, in turn, allows each learner to demonstrate mastery at their own pace, earning credentials each step along the way.

“UT Austin is once again at the forefront of education innovation for students and instructors. We are excited to support their efforts to bolster the college and career advising available to students in middle and high schools statewide,” said Jon Mott, Chief Learning Officer, Learning Objects. “Our experience in designing scalable, competency-based digital learning environments and curriculum allows us to support the varied needs of counselors and advisers across the state. In addition, our platform enables individualized, mastery-based learning.”

“Through the Texas OnCourse initiative we are working with multiple state agencies, employers, colleges and universities, state and national organizations, educators, and other stakeholders to develop innovative learning opportunities that will provide unprecedented support for secondary career and college advising across the state.”
Harrison Keller, Deputy to the President for Strategy and Policy, UT Austin

These competency-based modules and the Learning Objects micro-credentialing platform will be made available to all secondary counselors and advisers as part of their regular training. Additional online learning opportunities will be made available to students and their parents to help them understand their options and begin planning for postsecondary and career pathways.
