National Agreements Deliver Gale’s National Geographic Virtual Library to Library Patrons in Brazil and Saudi Arabia

Andover, Hampshire UK, Feb. 14, 2013 — Gale, part of Cengage Learning and a leading publisher of research and reference resources, announced today the signing of license agreements that will enable higher education institutions throughout Brazil and Saudi Arabia to access Gale’s National Geographic Virtual Library.

Developed in partnership with the National Geographic Society, one of the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organisations, the National Geographic Virtual Library comprises of National Geographic Magazine Archive, 1888-1994National Geographic Magazine Archive, 1995-current, and National Geographic: People, Animals, and the World – a virtual reference collection of full-text National Geographic books, maps, videos, downloadable images, and National Geographic Traveler magazine (2010current). At the core of National Geographic Virtual Library is National Geographic magazine, the official journal of the National Geographic Society. Recognised for some of the highest-quality photojournalism and cartography in the world, this award-winning, iconic magazine is famous for providing unparalleled, in-depth coverage of cultures, nature, science, technology, and the environment. The National Geographic Magazine Archive provides a complete archive of the magazine to the mid-1990s, including every issue and every article, all fully searchable through an intuitive interface, plus an additional subscription option for the years 1995-current.

Institutions will first need to acquire National Geographic Magazine Archive, 1888-1994 in order to subscribe to the other collections in the virtual library. All three collections are available via Gale’s powerful interface that enables users to cross-search this wealth of content for the first time, increasing the speed and effectiveness of research.

The national agreements in Brazil and Saudi Arabia were funded respectively by the Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES), and by the Saudi Digital Library, an organisation supporting all higher education institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

National Geographic Virtual Library will benefit library users at all levels, introducing students to primary-source materials that are relevant and engaging, and giving teachers and professors exciting resources that can be incorporated into syllabi and reading lists. They will support learning and research in a wide range of subject areas, such as anthropology, environment, geography, photography, and journalism.
