Cengage Learning Launches Knewton Adaptive Learning Technology within MindTap for Management and Sociology Students
MindTap’s personalized learning platform pairs with Knewton to create a learning experience directly tailored to the needs of each student
Boston, MA, February 18, 2015 — To become effective members of the future workforce, students must go beyond simply memorizing course concepts; they must gain a deep understanding of their course material and learn how to think like professionals. To help students achieve this, Cengage Learning, a global education company, has integrated technology from leading adaptive learning company, Knewton, into MindTap for management and sociology students. The courses are now available for purchase and will be used in classrooms nationwide in the fall 2015 semester.
The MindTap e-learning platform, together with Knewton, provides a personalized, engaging learning environment to help improve student outcomes and pave the way to deeper learning. MindTap will utilize Knewton adaptive learning technology to deliver truly individualized feedback to each student. As students work in MindTap, Knewton figures out exactly what each individual knows, then provides real-time personalized recommendations for what to study next. Knewton’s recommendations improve over time as it learns more about each student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning strategies. MindTap uses Knewton technology to help each student solidify understanding of core concepts, expand knowledge, and move forward toward mastery. Personalized activities will be located within a Study Center on the MindTap interface. Students can use the Study Center to focus efforts on the most important course concepts and better prepare for exams.
“We are delighted to build upon our relationship with Knewton. Their technology provides students with feedback and personalized study plans based on actual assigned coursework, which was particularly important for the studies of management and sociology,” said Jim Donohue, chief product officer, Cengage Learning. “As we at Cengage Learning are operating with a renewed and heightened focus on the needs of our student end users, this product directly addressed a question we often hear from students, ‘What do I already know and what do I need to work on?’ The technology not only identifies areas of weakness, but it also recommends the content that will help generate the best student performance – resulting in a better user experience for students and ultimately producing better learning outcomes.”
“Cengage Learning’s content and innovative MindTap platform take full advantage of the power of Knewton adaptive learning,” said Jose Ferreira, founder and CEO, Knewton. “These next-generation sociology and management courses were created from the ground up to be used via digital devices. We look forward to continuing to innovate together to improve student success.”
In addition to robust adaptive learning, students will experience the unique benefits of the MindTap platform – an engaging, integrated learning path, content that helps students progress from basic understanding to application and higher order thinking, a customizable eBook, and the MindTap Progress App. With this app, instructors can track student proficiency, allowing them to quickly gauge where students are in their learning and make the best use of class time.
