Cengage Learning’s National Geographic Learning Names AP® Student of the Year: Texas High School Student Aman Patel Recognized for World-Changing Ideas
Exceptional science student wins essay contest to work with Explorers and Scientists on a Research and Conservation Expedition in Belize
Boston, MA – June 15, 2015 — In 2014, National Geographic Learning (NGL), part of Cengage Learning, sought out an exceptional student looking to change the world through science. NGL is pleased to announce that Aman Patel, a student from Sugar Land, Texas, has been named as the recipient of NGL’s AP® Student of the Year Award. The award program was open to Advanced Placement science students in grades 9-12 and was based on the question, “What are you doing to change the world?” The award winner was selected by a panel of expert judges based on their review of submitted essays. Judges included a National Geographic Explorer and two Cengage Learning science authors.
Patel’s winning essay, “To Learn and Teach,” inspired the panel of judges with his themes of lifelong learning and spreading knowledge to others. In the essay, he describes his efforts to study Malaria and his research into antimalarial drug binding mechanisms. He states that, “To make the maximum impact, we need in the next generation a large, motivated group of scientists willing to take on unanswered questions in science.” To help in these efforts, Patel has founded an organization at his high school with the purpose of providing science enrichment to elementary age students.
As his reward for being named as the AP® Student of the Year, Patel will accompany marine biologist, ocean explorer, professor and National Geographic Explorer, David Gruber, on a Conservation in Action expedition to Belize. During the course of the 12-day trip, Patel and Gruber will conduct research on the barrier reef, photograph underwater species, snorkel the famous Blue Hole and learn about local ecotourism and conservation initiatives.
“It is part of our mission at National Geographic Learning to inspire learners to be thinkers, and Aman Patel is a perfect example of how education and critical thinking can change the world. His scientific research and enthusiasm for teaching and learning are unparalleled and the judges on the review panel were inspired and intrigued by his exceptional essay,” said Vincent Grosso, senior vice president, National Geographic Learning. “We create learning materials that bring the world to the classroom, and now Aman will have the opportunity to go from the classroom to the world on this life-changing Conservation in Action trip. We look forward to the amazing things he will accomplish throughout his educational and professional career.”
Many National Geographic Learning products draw on the real-world accounts of National Geographic explorers, scientists, writers and photographers. National Geographic Student Expeditions are active adventures designed so high school students can learn about the world firsthand with National Geographic. The summer student expeditions combine exploration, cultural immersion, and an On Assignment project that focuses on a specific topic– such as photography, wildlife and conservation, or filmmaking– and enables students to further engage with the places they visit.
