Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Part II – Expands Content by Nearly 50,000 Titles

Farmington Hills, Mich., Jan. 23, 2009 – Since 2003, Gale, a part of Cengage Learning, has provided the authoritative research collection in the study of the eighteenth century.   Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO), has met with high praise as the most ambitious scholarly digitization project ever undertaken. The newly released Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Part II: New Editions continues in that tradition, delivering the ease of online access through a new user interface while expanding the depth and breadth of content.

The new user interface increases functionality through the following enhancements:

  • Research Tools section for undergraduates with contextual essays and chronology
  • Image Gallery, Most Popular Searches and Key Documents sections
  • Citation generator and export functionality
  • Expanded download and email features
  • Keyword in Context feature from within the results list

Customers of Eighteenth Century Collections Online who are also customers of ProQuest’s Early English Books Online will have the option to perform cross-searches using both databases.

Offering nearly seven million pages of all-new content from close to 50,000 new titles, Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Part II enables researchers to study the eighteenth century in fresh and exciting ways.  As the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) — the underlying bibliography for the “ECCO” collection — has continued to uncover new works and editions and as source libraries have reported new holdings, Gale has continued our digitization operations, bringing previously inaccessible scholarly material to students and to researchers.

“Making this material available online in a full-text searchable research environment has enabled researchers and students to undertake projects they could not have attempted before,” says Jim Draper, vice president and publisher of Gale Digital Collections.  “This is the most comprehensive research-oriented digitization project available.”

With content from an eclectic variety of materials, including books, directories, bibles, sheet music, sermons and advertisements, Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Part II offers full-text search capabilities supported by comprehensive metadata. The materials in the collection support research in every academic discipline, including literature, history, geography, the social sciences, fine arts, medicine, science, religion, philosophy and law.
