Gale and K12 Inc. Announce Availability of Powerspeak Languages for School Libraries

Gale, part of Cengage Learning, and K12 Inc. (NYSE: LRN) today announced that Powerspeak Languages, the online language-learning product, is now available in the school library market.

Developed for Gale customers, the online courses use the research-driven powerspeaK12 language-learning methodology, which includes a variety of multi-sensory activities to take full advantage of the brain’s ability to acquire language. Designed to teach students of all ages, Powerspeak Languages includes a combination of scored online activities, exercises, lessons and games.

Available now, the first four language courses include Spanish, French, German and Mandarin Chinese. English for Spanish-Speakers will be available in March, 2010, with other language courses to follow.

Course activities include an adventure story containing rich graphics, audio, video and an intuitive way to track learning progress. Learners are also challenged to practice speaking and writing in a variety of interactive modules designed to simulate real conversations with native speakers.

Through its powerspeaK12 subsidiary, K12 Inc. is developing the Web-based language courses, which Gale is distributing. Gale and powerspeaK12 have worked hand-in-hand in a unique partnership to develop a service geared specifically for language-learners in libraries.

“Language learning is a growing part of the school curriculum and an important part of a well-rounded education,” said Bruce Davis, executive vice president of Business Development for K12 Inc. “We’re thrilled to partner with Gale to distribute language-learning courses throughout the school library market. Our partnership will give more students the opportunity to learn a new language using an exciting Web-based program that combines innovative instruction with proven teaching methods.”

“Students of all ages benefit greatly by learning a new language, both in their personal growth and in their ability to compete successfully in our global economy,” said Jim Draper, vice president and publisher at Gale. “We are delighted to make this new program available to school libraries, providing them the best and most engaging language-learning experience available.”
