Gale Announces GREENR, Global Reference on the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources

A new electronic resource offering authoritative reference content in the area of the environment, energy and natural resources, GREENR (Global Reference on the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources), is an important part of a new generation of products from Gale, part of Cengage Learning. A reflection of Gale’s “power to the user” philosophy, this product was designed with the end-user in mind.

“From global warming, to food safety, to access to health care, to the impact of economic development on international relations, today’s important environmental issues are shaping the future and reach far beyond the United States,” said Jay Flynn, Gale’s vice president and publisher for social science and K-12. “Additionally, as ‘green-collar’ jobs are poised for growth, municipalities strive to be environmentally friendly, and corporations develop green working environments, this resource becomes invaluable.”

Launching in June 2009, GREENR focuses on the academic study of sustainability and the environment. Both interactive and current, GREENR allows users to navigate issue, organization and country portals. A one-stop site, this resource provides news, background information, video, unique commentaries, primary source documents and statistics in highly accessible, visually appealing research areas, covering relevant categories including energy systems, healthcare, food, climate change, population and economic development.

“One of the things that makes GREENR so user-friendly, is it does not look like a database product,” said Flynn. “Researchers view content in a way that resembles the popular Web sites, allowing them to browse to find answers as well as entering search terms.”

This e-source also offers:

  • Interactive maps, allowing users to browse by country or topic
  • Opportunities for forums, networking and facilitating open discussion, allowing students and teachers to participate in general forums or those designed for specific classes
  • Contextual multimedia, customizable journals and news, refereed case studies
  • Localization to highlight community resources, allowing libraries to advertise their assets as well as upcoming local events
  • Web 2.0 tools to facilitate content portability and community building

GREENR is designed to support research in academic institutions, and supports study in school, public and special libraries. The resource addresses the growing needs of undergraduate students doing research in the area of the environment, energy and natural resources. Offering in-depth analysis, GREENR arms information seekers with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and succeed in an ever-changing world.
