Gale Announces New Reviewer

FARMINGTON HILLS, MICH. (May 23, 2008) – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, announces that Douglas Achterman is its new reviewer of print and electronic resources for the K-12 market.

Achterman, who is based at California’s San Benito High School, calls upon his 14 years as a secondary English teacher and nine years as a library media specialist to review new books and databases from Gale and other publishers on Gale’s Web site, www.galeschools.com.

Achterman says his approach to reviewing involves determining the work’s ultimate value.

“I consider the best place for a book — whether it’s in a K-12 or a junior college collection,” he said.  “I assess whether the book will work within a school library’s curriculum. And beyond that, I think about the readers and their age group. I try to see the book from a student’s perspective as well as an adult’s.”

In a library environment where “we have to watch our money carefully,” as Doug puts it, book reviews are often used as a tipping point on whether a product is added to a collection or not.

So with a nod to his busy peers in the K-12 school system, Achterman reviews many publications, but posts only reviews of those products that meet his criteria for quality. That way, he says, “my reviews can double as a list of purchase recommendations.”

Achterman’s reviews can be seen on “Doug’s Student Reference Room” on www.galeschools.com at http://www.gale.cengage.com/reference/doug/index.htm.
