Gale Announces Non-exclusive Licensing Agreement with NEWSWEEK
Gale, part of Cengage Learning, today announced an agreement with NEWSWEEK, Inc. covering the licensing of NEWSWEEK, Newsweek International and Newsweek.com content for all Gale products.
“We are proud of our relationship with NEWSWEEK, and the inclusion of its authoritative content within our electronic resources,” said John Barnes, Gale’s executive vice president, strategic marketing and business development. “We have been working with NEWSWEEK since 1986 and this new agreement extends our relationship for many years into the future.”
“We are pleased that this is a non-exclusive agreement,” continued Barnes. Gale participates in no exclusive periodicals licensing agreements in our aggregated databases. We believe exclusives run counter to free flow of information that is the foundation of libraries, and we congratulate NEWSWEEK for making their content available through multiple information providers.”
NEWSWEEK content is found in a variety of Gale products including InfoTrac, Grzimek’s Animal Life, Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, Student Resource Center and many others. This contract expands Gale’s backfile of NEWSWEEK and Newsweek International, which previously went back as far as 1994, and now covers an additional 14 years, to 1980.
Additionally, Gale is partnering with NEWSWEEK, in celebrating National Library Week, with a full-page ad in NEWSWEEK. On newsstands April 12, 2010, the ad recognizes the importance of libraries and invites readers to join the celebration by visiting their library and expressing appreciation for its services.
“As we all continue to work through these challenging economic conditions, libraries are key to our country’s turnaround and future success,” said Barnes. “Libraries need support from the communities they serve. The ad encourages people to do what they can to help libraries, whether it is a monetary donation or simply visiting the library to say thanks for all the library offers the community.”
