Gale Partners with YBP Library Services to Distribute eBooks to Academic Libraries

Access to premium content expanded with new long-term agreement

Gale, part of Cengage Learning, has entered into a long-term agreement with YBP Library Services, Inc., a Baker & Taylor company, to expand distribution of its popular and highly regarded Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) eBook collection, its landmark Literature Criticism Online, and the CODiE-finalist Gale Directory Library. Baker & Taylor, together with its subsidiary YBP Library Services, is the world’s largest wholesale distributor of books. YBP will distribute GVRL into the academic library market, where they have a market leadership position.

“Many have declared 2009 the ‘Year of the eBook,’ due to its sudden surge in popularity,” said Patrick C. Sommers, president, Gale. “In response to greater market demand for books and resources in electronic format, we are expanding distribution into the academic market with this trusted partner.

“This is the first time we’ve partnered to distribute these resources. We’re delighted that this partnership will make it easier for our academic customers to order, revise, and renew their subscriptions with YBP’s collection management services, easy ordering, cataloguing services and numerous workflow services,” said Sommers. “YBP has helped us distribute print resources for many years, and we are delighted to expand our relationship with them.”

GVRL offers nearly 3,000 reference sources from some 50 authoritative publishers on a stable, easy-to-use platform. Libraries have the flexibility to buy one eBook or multiple eBooks; search across a single eBook or an entire eBook collection. The collection grows weekly and covers a wide variety of topics and subjects — ranging from current events to classics and from arts and humanities to small business management. Literature Criticism Online brings together 10 of the most acclaimed literary series representing a range of modern and historical views on authors and their works across regions, eras and genres. Gale Directory Library is an online collection of cross-searchable, authoritative directories of companies, publishers, associations, and more.

“We’re excited to expand our e-content by offering Gale electronic reference and monograph products,” said George Coe, president, Library and Educational, at Baker & Taylor. “Our customers want format choices, and we are pleased to integrate these products into GOBI™ collection development and acquisitions tools, where they live naturally next to their print counterparts.

“Collaborating with Gale will help YBP Library Services fulfill its mission to deliver the most respected and highest-quality book content to academic libraries across the U.S. regardless of medium,” said Coe. “We welcome this new chapter in our alliance.”

Academic customers may also continue to purchase these products from their Gale representative. The new partnership simply expands customers’ options for ordering and allows customers to take advantage of the numerous services YBP provides.
