Six Gale Resources Named CODiE Award Finalists – Most Products Recognized for Any Company

Farmington Hills, Mich., Dec, 11, 2009 – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, is honored to have six resources recognized as finalists in the Software & Information Industry Association’s (SIIA) 25th Annual CODiE Awards in the content categories.  The CODiE Awards celebrate achievement in digital content and are the only peer-reviewed honor in the industry.

“Our online resources have been selected from many high-caliber products as some of the best in the industry,” said John Barnes, Gale’s executive vice president of strategic marketing and business development.  “Gale is proud to have six outstanding reference sources recognized by the SIIA.  To have the most products reaching the finalist stage is a testament to the quality of the products we’re producing and the emphasis we put on the user experience.”

Gale has three finalists in the Best Online Consumer Information Service category: PowerSearch 2.0, Health & Wellness Resource Center and Encyclopedia.com, which joined the Gale family through the HighBeam Research acquisition in 2008. The Best Online Consumer Information Service category awards the best online service and/or Web site with specific focus on information targeted toward individuals, consumers, hobbyists and home users. This includes travel, sports, consumer medical reference, tax preparation, etc.  It excludes services whose primary focus is news.

Gale Virtual Reference Library is a finalist in the Best Online General Reference Service category, awarding the online service that best packages reference information, including encyclopedias, maps, wikis, etc. for home or business use.

Global Issues in Context is a finalist in the Best Online News Service category, which awards the best online service focused on current awareness, as opposed to breaking news. Service may be from original publishers or distributors, and must clearly be focused on the delivery of news.

Career Transitions is a finalist in the Best Workforce Training Solution category, awarding the best software or online product/service to instruct line employees in a body of specific, job-related knowledge.

“This is the 25th year we have recognized excellence through the CODiE Awards program, and the ninth year we have offered awards in the content categories,” noted Ken Wasch, President of SIIA. “The competition is tough, as many companies are looking to make their products stand out from the competition. The innovations in the content industry shine through in the products selected as finalists.”

The products that qualified will now be reviewed by members of SIIA, who will vote on winners for all 15 categories. The winners will be announced at a special CODiE Awards Dinner on January 26th, which will be held in conjunction with the 2010 Information Industry Summit.

About the CODiE Awards Program
The CODiE Awards, originally called the Excellence in Software Awards, were established in 1986 by the Software Publishers Association (SPA), now the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), so that pioneers of the then-nascent software industry could evaluate and honor each other’s work. Since then, the CODiE Awards program has carried out the same purpose – to showcase the software and information industry’s finest products and services and to honor excellence in corporate achievement and philanthropic efforts.

The CODiE Awards hold the distinction of being the industry’s only peer-reviewed awards program, which provides member companies with a unique opportunity to earn praise from their competitors. Now in its twenty-fifth year, the CODiE Awards program has raised the standard for excellence and serves as prestigious representation of outstanding achievement and vision in the software and information industry.
