Something About the Author Online – Provides Easy Access to Iconic Gale Publication

Farmington Hills, Mich., Jan. 23, 2009 — Covering the lives and works of authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults, Something About the Author Online takes an iconic Gale publication and provides online access.

Launched in November 2008, Something About the Author Online provides first-time online access to all volumes ever printed in Something About the Author, the main series, and Something About the Author: Autobiography Series.

With 217 volumes, more than 19,000 entries and nearly 17,000 images, Something About the Author Online is enhanced with personal photos and present an entertaining and informative first-person perspective on the lives and careers of prominent authors and illustrators of this genre.

“For researchers who only work online, or traditional library users, this source combines ease of usage with the highly regarded content this publication has always been known for,” said Janet Witalec, project manager for Something About the Author Online.  “Having this option bodes well for Gale’s mission to provide power to the user, allowing researchers to find answers in the form they prefer.

“Students, parents, teachers, professors and other researchers value having 24/7 access to complete class assignments, develop presentations, find appropriate books for children and young adults, write papers and complete other research,” said Witalec.

Preserving the integrity of the print reference series, the online version allows the publication to reach a wider audience, by providing a backfile of searchable page images digitized directly from the print version.  The user searches on an author’s name and the screen displays the writer’s biographical profile including personal data, addresses, career, awards and honors, writings, sidelights (an overview essay of the author’s life and works), adaptations and additional sources.

Each time a new Something About the Author volume is published, it is automatically loaded to Something About the Author Online.  This is a growing collection covering both well-known writers and artists and less prominent individuals whose works are coming to be recognized, creating an ever-evolving digital solution to children’s literature reference questions.
